Volunteer Opportunities

The chapter consists of approximately 200 members throughout Northern New England and Canada. All chapter benefits and events are coordinated by members like you who graciously volunteer their time. Whether you want to contribute a couple of hours per year or per month, we can use your hands on deck.

Why volunteer?

Being a chapter volunteer increases your visibility, gets your name known to the technical communication community, and provides invaluable experience on your career ladder. You can also make contacts that will serve you well in future job searches. Volunteering is also a great way to network with other technical communicators, and the experience you gain provides a solid foundation for your outside work.

Job Bank Manager

The job bank manager's primary responsibilities are to:

  • Be the contact person for job postings
  • Search online job banks for new technical communication job postings
  • Work with the webmaster to put the postings up and taking them down from the Job Bank web page in a timely manner

The time commitment for this position averages 2-3 hours per month. Attendance at monthly board meetings and monthly chapter meetings is recommended but not required.

Benefits include name recognition with companies looking for technical documentation personnel and you'll gain insight on the current job market and what skills companies are looking for.

This position is ideal for someone who likes to be the first to know who is hiring, what skills are in demand, and likes to feel good about helping our membership find jobs.

Workshop Manager

The workshop manager's primary responsibilities are to:

  • Coordinates 1-2 workshops per year. Tasks include:
    • Determining workshop topic
    • Contacting potential presenters
    • Maintaining list of attendees
    • Securing location and equipment
    • Ordering food and beverage
    • Writing web site copy, advertising, and e-mail notices
    • Coordinating with the presenter
  • Coordinates with treasurer to ensure attendees pay on time.

The time commitment for this position averages 8-10 hours per workshop over a 1-2 month period. Attendance at monthly board meetings and monthly chapter meetings is recommended but not required.

Benefits include name recognition, networking opportunities, and you'll gain insight into the topics of interest to technical communicators.

This position is ideal for someone who is very organized and thorough.

Newsletter Editor

The newsletter editor's primary responsibilities are to:

  • Research and request articles from an available pool of writers
  • Organize the layout of the newsletter
  • Coordinate with the second vice-president on advertisements and sponsors
  • Work with the proofreader to correct any errors
  • Coordinate with the webmaster to upload the newsletter to the website
  • Send out an e-mail to membership announcing the newsletter availability

The time commitment for this position averages 5-6 hours per newsletter every 2 months. Attendance at monthly board meetings and monthly chapter meetings is recommended but not required.

Benefits include name recognition and valuable experience for your resume.

This position is ideal for someone who is very organized, thorough, and can meet deadlines.
