GROTON -- Mildred Elizabeth "Susie" (Mulcahy) McGuire, 73, died Saturday, March 11, 2000 at her home in West Groton. She was the wife of Joseph F. McGuire, whom she married on Feb. 23, 1957.
She was born in Detroit on Aug. 14, 1927, a daughter of Thomas and Mildred (Collins) Mulcahy. She was educated in Detroit and earned her bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Detroit in 1949. In 1970, she was certified as a teacher, and in 1980 earned certification as a technical writer. A partial scholarship for technical writing study was established in her name at the University of Lowell.
Mrs. McGuire worked as an information specialist at Lucent Technologies before her retirement in January. She had also worked as a freelance contract writer, and founded Alpine Technical Services in the 1970s.
Mrs. McGuire had also worked at the Wang Co., Bell Laboratories, Wyandot Chemical Co. and the 3M Co.
Mrs. McGuire was a member of the Society for Technical Communications and was a founding member of its New England chapter. She received awards and citations for her work for the disadvantaged, including a Star award from Lucent Technologies.
She was a member of the Groton Republican Club, treasurer of the Groton Council of Churches, and vice president of the Groton Woman's Club. Mrs. McGuire was president, secretary and a founding member of the Groton Chapter of the Massachusetts Citizens for Life, and also helped organize St. James Advent Giving Tree Committee, which provides Christmas gifts for needy youngsters.
Mrs. McGuire was a communicant of St. James Church in West Groton, and was an eucharistic minister there.
Besides her husband, survivors include four sons, Gerard T., Joseph W., Paul D. and Michael A. McGuire; 12 grandchildren; a brother, Thomas J. Mulcahy of Leonard, Mich.; two sisters, Mary O'Connor of Grosse Pointe Park, Mich., and Patricia Huber of Milford, Mich.; and many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
